We were treated to an enthralling talk by Hanneke Dye at our November meeting, you could have heard a pin drop! She is a Jew and was born in hiding during the war in a house in Holland and then spent her early years hidden in an orphanage. She was also a torch bearer for the London 2012 Olympics and brought along the torch to be passed around -it was a great relief when it managed to get round without being dropped!

Another fascinating talk with slides last night from Robert Whitehead, guiding us along part two of Bradford's Millennium Way. The Millennium Way goes through such a diverse section of scenery and buildings; all with a different tale to tell.
A RUMMAGE IN GRANNY'S DRAWERS. What a lovely meeting we had last night. Dale Keaton gave us a potted history of 150 years of ladies' underwear and brought along samples to pass round. I am so glad I wasn't around in the 19th century - the layers and layers of clothing that had to be put on before you actually got to the dress is unbelievable and as for the corsets ... well, how uncomfortable must they have been ... imagine being laced into something to try and get your waist down to 12" and what with all the bones as well it would be nigh impossible to bend over! A really fascinating insight into days gone by!! We finished off the evening with our usual cup of tea accompanied by some more of our delicious birthday cake left from our party in January. I think it's just about finished now! Next meeting is Pat Osborne returning to tell us about Lady Randy, Winston Churchill's mother. I've just added some more photos of our party - have a look at Photo Gallery 2013 We celebrated our 50th birthday last Monday with a party. Unfortunately because of the freezing temperatures several of our members weren't able to get there and they missed out on a really good celebration. We had nibbles, bubbly, quizzes, entertainment in the form of singing by some of the committee with a bit of drama thrown in! And a birthday party isn't complete without a cake (which was made and iced by two of our members) with candles which were blown out by two founding members of Harden WI - Jean and Janet. We then surprised them with a presentation to commemorate their 50 years membership. Plenty of photographs were taken and as soon as I get them I'll post them on the website.
Yesterday we were treated to another fascinating talk with slides from Robert Whitehead, this time on part of the Millennium Way. As this 45 mile walk passes through Harden we found it particularly interesting and discovered many things about our local area that none of us were aware of. He ended the talk on Keighley Moor and we are now going to have to wait until next June when he returns to tell us about the second part which culminates where it began at Shipley Glen.
Unfortunately, I was away for the October meeting when Tricia Atkinson returned to talk about Maud Lewis. But from talking to others who were there I understand that, as always, she gave a really interesting talk with slides about the amazing life of Maud Lewis who was born in Canada in the early 20th century severely disabled and how she overcame all obstacles.
Tricia has a long list of subjects about which she talks so I'm sure we'll be inviting her back again. After our "Summer" break we have now resumed our activities starting with our meeting last Monday when Robert Waddington followed his hilarious talk last year about his adventurous holidays on the Isle of Eigg with a talk entitled "Anywhere Nice"? We were not disappointed when he had us in fits of laughter yet again telling us about his rather disastrous holiday combining the Isle of Eigg with a stay on the nearby island of Canna.
We had our annual get together this month with Bardsey cum Rigton WI and we had a lovely time meeting them all again. We provided a supper of Coronation Chicken with salads followed by fruit cake with Wensleydale cheese which gave us plenty of time for chatting! This was followed by our speaker, Tony Cleaver who gave us a hilarious talk entitled "From Karaoke to Cabaret" where he told us all about his experiences singing on the "stage". He soon had us all joining in with the well known songs. |
